FOOD MARATHON BY THE MOUNTAINSIDE

WE had an early morning hike this Tuesday (Feb. 18) to Talangka for a SURPRISE despedida breakfast for Arnel, our UAE-bound friend. But we were the ones surprised for he left for Manila to attend to matters related to his Wednesday-scheduled flight. Still, we decided to stay their residence and spend there the rest of the morning.

Even if he was not there, his parents offered us stuff to munch on. It was kinda humorous for different kinds of food were served on the table set on their banana tree surrounded backyard. I thought we will just eat our planned champorado meal, but wait, there's more!

Aside from the said meal, another friend brought lomi. To enjoy the place, we had a brief hike on a hill nearby and picked coconuts. We also collected and ate tamarinds scattered around the tree.

When we went back the house, we were offered 'patabol' and 'calamay', plus Pancit Canton, rice and ginataang langka. What an unexpected treat!

Coconut husks as usual.

Always present during kainan.

Champorado naman!

Lola Mely enjoys kneading  malagkit.

Tried to do the same thing for a while.

It's just a joke. But I learned the procedure. First, heat the coconut milk. Then, add sugar, cook the kneaded malagkit. Wait 'til it looks reasonably edible (ano raw? hehe). 'Patabol' is termed sweet flat-rice cake in English.

This is how it looks if it's ready to eat.

Going on a hike on a nearby hill rewards you this view.

Someone climbed the coconut tree for us.

It's a coconut juice-drinking contest!

These tamarinds tasted quite good. Not too sour. :)

...and the much awaited treat.

The rest is history...
